Gesture, Gaze, and Ground

چکیده

My emphasis in this paper is on floor control in multiparty discourse: the approach is psycholinguistic. This perspective includes turn management, turn exchange and coordination; how to recognize the dominant speaker even when he or she is not speaking, and a theory of all this. The data to be examined comprise a multimodal depiction of a 5-party meeting (a US Air Force war gaming session) and derive from a project carried out jointly with my engineering colleagues, Francis Quek and Mary Harper. See the Chen et al. paper in this volume for details of the recoding session.

Eye'm talking to you: speakers' gaze direction modulates co-speech gesture processing in the right MTG.

Recipients process information from speech and co-speech gestures, but it is currently unknown how this processing is influenced by the presence of other important social cues, especially gaze direction, a marker of communicative intent. Such cues may modulate neural activity in regions associated either with the processing of ostensive cues, such as eye gaze, or with the processing of semantic...

Low cost remote gaze gesture recognition in real time

Predefined sequences of eye movements, or ‘gaze gestures’, can be consciously performed by humans and monitored non-invasively using remote video oculography. Gaze gestures hold great potential in human–computer interaction, HCI, as long as they can be easily assimilated by potential users, monitored using low cost gaze tracking equipment and machine learning algorithms are able to distinguish ...

Correction: Gaze Direction and Request Gesture in Social Interactions

One of the most important faculties of humans is to understand the behaviour of other conspecifics. The present study aimed at determining whether, in a social context, request gesture and gaze direction of an individual are enough to infer his/her intention to communicate, by searching for their effects on the kinematics of another individual's arm action. In four experiments participants reac...

Type of gesture, valence, and gaze modulate the influence of gestures on observer's behaviors

The present kinematic study aimed at determining whether the observation of arm/hand gestures performed by conspecifics affected an action apparently unrelated to the gesture (i.e., reaching-grasping). In 3 experiments we examined the influence of different gestures on action kinematics. We also analyzed the effects of words corresponding in meaning to the gestures, on the same action. In Exper...

Incorporating Gesture and Gaze into Multimodal Models of Human-to-Human Communication

In human communication, utterances are expressed with some structural events, e.g., sentence, speech repairs, control of floor, and etc. These structural events bring important information and quite helpful for a better understanding of human communication. Meanwhile, the human communication is also full of multimodal behaviors, e.g., gesture, gaze, and etc. As non-verbal signals, gesture and g...

Early binding of gaze, gesture, and emotion: neural time course and correlates.

Communicative intentions are transmitted by many perceptual cues, including gaze direction, body gesture, and facial expressions. However, little is known about how these visual social cues are integrated over time in the brain and, notably, whether this binding occurs in the emotional or the motor system. By coupling magnetic resonance and electroencephalography imaging in humans, we were able...
